Project Description
The project involved the renovation and conversion of a two story gambrel barn into residential space.
Services Provided
C&A provided structural and civil engineering services. Structural work involved visually inspecting the structural components, analyzing new framing options, developing structural reinforcement plans & details, and performing construction inspection. A significant challenge in reusing the barn involved the removal of the large diagonal struts located along the
second floor / hayloft. The struts were used to help the roof resist lateral wind and seismic loads and extended a quarter of the way into the floor space. To allow the removal of the struts, detailed finite analysis was conducted to determine the optimum reinforcement method. Other challenges include the modification of the gable end walls and the installation of a mezzanine. |
