Project Description
The project involved the renovation of the 70' octagon shaped timber framed steeple on the Catskill church. Renovations were performed as far as the basement level to reinforce the leaning steeple.
Services Provided
C&A provided structural engineering services. Structural work involved visually inspecting the structural components, analyzing new framing options, developing structural reinforcement plans & details, and performing construction inspection.
A detailed analysis of the steeple was conducted to determine the precise effects of wind loading on the structure. The steeple was reinforced using the addition of steel cross bracing on 4 of the 8 faces of steeple installed at numerous levels. A significant challenge in this project was the connection of the proposed cross bracing to the existing timber members. This was accomplished using a custom steel plate and clevis system. In addition, steel channel floor reinforcement was installed in the attic level below to stiffen the steeple's bearing points. |
