Project Description
The project involved the renovation of a 4 story wood framed hotel and restaurant. The renovation included full foundation improvements including flood proofing of the basement with shotcrete. It also included full reconstruction of the wood framed upper floors with corresponding reinforcement to the lower levels. Also, the design of a large addition to the kitchen area using CMU walls and pre-cast concrete plank flooring was performed.
Services Provided
C&A provided structural engineering services. Structural work involved visually inspecting the existing structural components, analyzing new framing options, and developing structural reinforcement plans & details. It also included the full design and drafting of structural plans for the kitchen addition from foundation to roof.
The obstacles overcome with this project involve the difficulties of designing a multiple story wood structure, including in depth analysis and design of plywood shear walls and hold downs. In addition, the high design flood elevation for the area made flood proofing a critical process. The challenges to the new kitchen addition involved the tie in to the existing structure with proposed CMU walls. Coordination of mechanical equipment in the new kitchen addition was also very important. |
